The Speed30 Design Story

Originally designed by notable yacht designer, Theo Werner, to Lloyd’s Register Rules & Regulations, and further developed with our internal design department, the Monoposto Speed30 is distinguished by its smooth, iconic form. While undoubtedly inspired by the legends of the Italian Lakes, the Speed30 seeks a different path, combining design cues from legendary American commuter boats of the 1930s, with some of the Dolce Vita present in those legendary Italians from Sarnico. The result, a purposeful blend of sex appeal and rugged capability, cuts a simultaneously familiar and unique path in the water. Embracing the proven archetypes of yacht design, with a modern manoeuvrability, practicality, reliability, technology and ease of operation that is unprecedented in a sporting yacht of its size.

The Hull

A unique composite hull design was further developed by the Monoposto Design department and our engineering partners. The design, incorporating both proven Deep-V design and cutting-edge spray-rail technology, results in exceptional high-speed performance, maneuverability, stability, and unparalleled efficiency and quietness, even at 40 knots. It is, without question, a class-leader.

The Power

The Monoposto Speed30 utilises a pair of Volvo Penta D3 Diesel engines. This legendary and reliable powertrain delivers 440hp, resulting in a top speed of more than 40 knots. If more power is desired, the Speed30S, a unique sporting version of the Speed30, is fitted with two Volvo Penta D4 Diesel engines, resulting in 600hp and 48 knots* top speed. If there are additional or unique power requirements, these can be discussed with our team at Monoposto. Further, the Monoposto Speed30 and Speed30S are the first boats in their class to offer an optional hybrid electric power system that allows them to maintain their performance and distance while also conforming to stricter global energy requirements. Whether in standard or optional hybrid configuration, the proven dual prop design, coupled with port and starboard thrusters operated by joysticks, ensures that both the Speed30 and Speed30S can travel at extremely low speeds with exceptional ease and eerie quietness, making it infinitely suitable for traveling narrow and more populated waterways, such as the canals of Amsterdam or the crowded harbours of the Cote d’Azur.

* Actual top speed figures are estimates, pending definitive water trials.

The Colour Range

Monoposto’s colour selection is steeped in history. The Monoposto design department has had fortunate access to the colour libraries of some of the world’s most revered sporting automobile marques, dating back to the 1950’s and stretching into the present. The colours of Aston Martin, Bentley, Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini have all formed the backbone and inspiration for the unique range of fifteen standard and two special colours available on the Monoposto Speed30, Speed30S and Limited Editions.

The Exterior

The Speed30 cuts a robust profile in the water that blends both of its influences into one unique form. This hybrid design results in a boat that slices through the water effortlessly, while also having a large carrying capacity and a comfortable, ergonomic and modern interior. The Deep V hull ensures that the boat planes smoothly at speed, resulting in little disturbance to passengers within. It is a very usable all-rounder instead of a rather limited boat like many of its predecessors.

Each Speed 30 receives hundreds of hours of attention in her painting and finishing. The hull colour for example, is laid in five layers, each one hand-sanded; and the varnished deck receives ten coats of varnish, each one hand-applied and hand-sanded. Each layer is also inspected as it is completed for imperfections.

Each individual deck detail was considered and evaluated for its aesthetic value to the boat as a whole, as well as its safety and functionality. Rather than use a range of standard polished steel components, we work with various specialists to ensure that the sourcing or creation all exterior components and accessories are truly Monoposto-Style in quality, design, and functionality.

The Interior

The internal deck of the Monoposto Speed30 is designed to be a place of comfort, luxury and safety, and is equipped and finished at the highest level. We have worked with local suppliers and craftsmen to upholster and finish the boat, creating an environment of simple and durable luxury that is also easy to maintain, using sustainable and certified materials and waterproof fabrics where applicable. The interior includes plenty of hidden storage, a refrigerator and upright wine cooler as standard, with the option for an additional champagne cooler, or espresso maker, hidden away until needed. A sink, faucet, and single burner cooktop are also possible as part of one of our lifestyle options. Top level appliances, and all-weather hardware and mechanisms are used throughout, as you would expect in a hand-crafted sporting yacht.

The reasonably upright stance and depth of the cabin means that the skipper and guests are in the boat and not on the boat- a problem of many classic boats. When steering the boat, or standing on the internal deck, you are largely below the windshield, and protected from any side spray that may occur. The Speed30’s unique hull design further ensures that side spray is minimal, even at speed.

The internal cabin, incorporating the sanitary, storage and sleeping facilities, is a unique feature of a boat of this size, and in its design, materials and intimate atmosphere, furthers the Speed30’s total commitment to the sporting luxury experience. The result is a motor yacht that is at its best; both while at anchor or port, or while cruising between destinations across open water.

Special Components

Where necessary, Monoposto has worked with both Dutch and European firms to design and manufacture unique, bespoke components for the Monoposto Speed30.

In particular, the windscreen is a design unique to Monoposto. It incorporates multiple panels of high-impact, scratchproof Lexan polycarbonate, moulded in a curved form, and incorporating a thin layer of light-sensitive green polarized film we call Aquatint® that transitions to light or dark depending on the intensity of the ambient, outdoor light. In the evening, it all but disappears, while in the sunlight, it is at full intensity, possessing the hue of vintage aviator sunglasses. Aquatint® is available as an option on the Speed30 and Speed30S.

Another of our unique signatures is the engine ventilation ducts located on the exterior port and starboard sides of the engine bay. Rather than simply finish these with a mesh screen, we have seen these as an opportunity to further set the Speed30 apart, and add to its allure. We have modelled the air vents off of the exhaust pipes on the legendary Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane. These twelve ducts, placed six per side, are hand finished and polished, and allow any heat build-up in the engine compartment to escape in style.
